Somerset Country Pub Where You Can Enjoy a Pint with Wallace

Since its launch on June 30, Gromit Unleashed 3 has captured hearts across Somerset with a trail of 53 unique sculptures stretching nearly 50 miles from Cheddar Gorge in the south to Slimbridge in the north.

At the southern tip of this enchanting trail lies The New Inn in Blagdon, North Somerset, home to one of the most spectacular statues: The Big Friendly Wallace. Set against rolling hills and the serene Blagdon Lake, this charming tribute to the beloved Roald Dahl character has been captivating visitors all summer long in the pub’s picturesque beer garden.

The New Inn welcomes guests for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, with Sunday hours from midday until 7 pm. James Wilson, the pub manager, shared how Wallace’s presence has significantly boosted business. “It drives footfall before we’re even open, and it drives footfall when we’re open,” he explained.

Although the influx of customers can’t be attributed solely to Wallace—especially during a summer of mostly splendid weather—James estimates the statue has drawn in as many as 600 extra visitors each week since its installation. He also expressed surprise at the number of trail-goers stopping by the pub while exploring all 53 sculptures. “Especially as we’re not on a main road, we’re more of a destination pub, so you can really notice it when people are passing through,” he noted.

Wallace isn’t the only reason to visit The New Inn. Their kitchen serves a variety of pub classics, with many ingredients sourced from nearby Yeo Valley Farms. Sunday roasts are a highlight, and a selection of local ales is available to enjoy either outside in the garden or indoors by the fire during colder months. For private gatherings and events, The Tipsy Trout—a dedicated space named after Blagdon Lake angling—is also available for hire.

Other notable Gromit Unleashed sculptures outside central Bristol include “Toucan Tango” Feathers McGraw at Noah’s Ark Farm in Wraxhall and “Fisherman’s Friend” Wallace at the West Country Water Park near Bradley Stoke.

The trail runs until August 31, raising funds for Bristol children’s charity The Grand Appeal, making every visit both enjoyable and purposeful.
