Somerset Councillors Honor Christine Lawrence as By-Election Candidates Emerge

Somerset councillors gathered to pay heartfelt tribute to Councillor Christine Lawrence, who retired after more than two decades serving the Dunster division. Representing the rural area between Minehead and the Quantock Hills, Ms Lawrence has been a respected figure in local politics for over 20 years.

Her retirement, announced in early September, has triggered a by-election set for October 23, with four candidates confirmed following the nomination deadline on September 26.

At the recent full council meeting in Bridgwater, numerous councillors expressed their gratitude for Ms Lawrence’s dedication and leadership. Councillor Mike Best, chairing the meeting, highlighted her distinguished career and unwavering commitment to West Somerset’s communities. “You have served with integrity, compassion, and a deep understanding of your constituents’ needs,” he said, praising her outstanding public service.

Councillor Diogo Rodrigues, leader of the Conservative opposition group, also offered his thanks. “Christine’s positive impact extends beyond this council to the local Conservative party, where she has been a shining example for many years,” he noted.

Fellow Conservative Councillor Mandy Chilcott acknowledged Ms Lawrence’s trailblazing role for women in local politics. As the only woman to have served as leader of West Somerset Council and chair of Somerset County Council, Ms Lawrence has set high standards of service. “You have a caring heart, sharp mind, and unparalleled resilience," Chilcott remarked.

In the wake of Ms Lawrence’s departure, her casework has been overseen by Liberal Democrat Councillor Marcus Kravis, whose partner, Cara Strom, is one of the candidates contesting the upcoming by-election. Kravis shared his appreciation for her support over the years.

Other councillors also praised Ms Lawrence’s wisdom and leadership, with Councillor Frances Nicholson noting, “If I ever disagreed with Christine, I had to think twice—she was almost always right.”

Responding to the tributes, Ms Lawrence expressed gratitude for her years of service. “It has been a real privilege to work alongside you all,” she said. “I will cherish these memories as I look forward to spending more time at home.”

The confirmed candidates vying to succeed Ms Lawrence in the Dunster division are:

  • James Bellamy (Conservative Party)
  • Terry Ledlie (Labour Party)
  • Jonathan Rollason (Reform UK)
  • Cara Strom (Liberal Democrats)

Polling stations will be open on October 23 from 7 am to 10 pm, with the results expected the following morning.
