Somerset Councillor Leaves Lib Dems to Serve as Independent

Ann Morgan, a councillor representing High Littleton, Hallatrow & Farrington Gurney in Bath and North East Somerset, has officially resigned from the ruling Liberal Democrat party to serve as an independent. Elected in the 2023 local elections as a Liberal Democrat, Ms Morgan emphasized that her commitment to her community will continue without interruption.

“My role as ward councillor is now independent and not tied to any political party,” Ms Morgan said. She reassured residents that she remains fully accessible to support them with any concerns or questions, including those regarding her decision to leave the Liberal Democrats.

When asked about her reasons for departing from the party, which holds a dominant two-thirds majority on the council, Ms Morgan declined to specify, stating there were “no specifics.” Following her departure, the council’s website lists her as part of the Independent Group.

Kevin Guy, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the council, acknowledged her resignation. “Councillor Morgan informed us of her intention to leave the Liberal Democrat group after being elected on our manifesto. Our priority remains advancing our values and addressing current local issues to promote a sustainable, inclusive future for all communities in Bath and North East Somerset,” he said.

The council’s political composition has shifted slightly following Ms Morgan’s move. The Liberal Democrats hold 39 seats, Labour has seven, the Independent Group five, the Greens three, Independents for B&NES three, and the Conservatives two—down from six seats just six years ago.
