Somerset Council Neutrality on 1,700 Frome Homes at Inquiry

Somerset Council has decided to maintain a neutral stance at a public inquiry concerning the proposed Selwood Garden Community (SGC) in Frome. The development, consisting of 1,700 new homes and various amenities, faces scrutiny with concerns raised by local campaigners and councillors alike.

The decision to adopt a neutral stance comes after the council had initially been leaning towards refusal of the plans, citing concerns over the scale, environmental impact, and infrastructure. However, the council now intends to contest only the level and timing of financial contributions towards local facilities, offering no evidence against the overall plans.

Opponents of the SGC have highlighted various issues, including the potential strain on local infrastructure, environmental impact, and the significant increase in traffic congestion. They have also expressed concerns about sewage spillage into the river, the inadequacy of existing drainage systems, and the unfeasibility of proposed design deliveries.

Despite objections from some councillors and local groups, others have been swayed by additional concessions and contributions promised by the developers. These developments have led some to withdraw their objections, with the belief that the housing crisis necessitates the construction of more affordable housing, despite the loss of green spaces.

The fear of incurring legal costs in excess of £400,000 has played a significant role in the council’s decision to maintain a neutral stance, with the potential for financial ruin in the event of an unsuccessful opposition.

The aforementioned public inquiry is scheduled to commence on July 29 and is expected to last for 12 days, with at least one site visit. The venue for the inquiry will be confirmed by mid-July.
