Somerset Council has commenced work on upgrading a key section of the cycling and walking route along the A39 corridor between Minehead and Dunster. The project aims to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists while promoting sustainable travel options. Scheduled for completion within seven weeks, the improvements are designed to support both daily commuters and recreational users.
During daytime hours, two-way traffic will be maintained to minimise disruption for motorists. Some night-time work will be carried out at the start and close of the project, managed through light-controlled traffic systems to ensure safety. Throughout the duration of the works, a temporary 30mph speed limit will be enforced to protect both workers and road users.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and waste, emphasized the significance of the project: “Delivering a safe walking and cycling route like this is a vital step forward. Our team is committed to keeping disruption to a minimum while creating a facility that everyone can enjoy—whether commuting to school and work or cycling for leisure. We want to offer people better travel choices and improve overall accessibility.”
