Somerset Confirm Departure of Four Players Ahead of Season’s End

Somerset County Cricket Club has announced that bowlers Josh Davey, Ben Green, and Kasey Aldridge, along with batter Andy Umeed, will be departing the squad at the conclusion of the current season. Each player is pursuing more regular playing time elsewhere.

Josh Davey, 35, who joined Somerset from Middlesex in 2014, has been a stalwart at the County Ground, appearing in 159 matches across all formats. The Aberdeen-born all-rounder claimed 317 wickets and scored 1,906 runs during his tenure. A notable highlight of his career was playing a key role in Somerset’s 2019 One-Day Cup victory over Hampshire at Lord’s, where he took 2 wickets for 28 runs in eight overs.

Ben Green, 27, is a prominent member of Somerset’s white-ball squad. Hailing from Exeter, Green rose through the Devon youth system and earned a three-year contract in 2016. Since making his List A debut in 2018, he has been integral to Somerset’s limited-overs success, including the 2023 T20 Blast championship. Green has accumulated 99 wickets and 770 runs in T20 cricket but has found first-class opportunities limited, spending part of the current season on loan to Leicestershire.

Kasey Aldridge, 24, a Bristol native, came up through Somerset’s youth ranks. Signing his first professional contract at 17, Aldridge has made 32 first-class appearances. Like Green, he was part of the title-winning T20 Blast squad in 2023 but has struggled to secure a permanent spot in either the red or white-ball sides. Earlier this season, he went on loan to Durham.

Despite the club offering contract renewals to all three bowlers, they have opted to decline and seek more consistent playing opportunities elsewhere.

Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, expressed gratitude for their contributions: “Josh, Ben, and Kasey have played vital roles in our recent successes and have all earned winner’s medals with Somerset. We thank them for their commitment and impact on the club, and while they have chosen to pursue opportunities elsewhere, they will always be welcome at the Cooper Associates County Ground.”

In a related announcement, batter Andy Umeed will also leave Somerset at the end of his current contract. The 29-year-old former Warwickshire player and Scotland international joined Somerset in 2022 after advancing through the South Asian Cricket Academy. He represented the club 40 times across First Class and List A formats.

Reflecting on his departure, Umeed said, “Taunton is a special place, and I’ve cherished every moment here. The fans have been incredible, and I’m proud to have worn Somerset colors. Although I’m disappointed to leave so soon, I’ll always be grateful to Somerset for giving me a second chance in professional cricket.”

Hurry added, “Andy contributed significantly to our 50-over side’s progress. We thank him for his professionalism and commitment and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Additionally, James Rew has been named captain for Somerset’s upcoming Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign starting tomorrow at Middlesex. Rew shared his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m excited about the opportunity to play alongside my brother and other talented youngsters coming through our Pathway. With experienced players like Tom Lammonby and Jake Ball, I’m hopeful for a strong season.”

A scheduled warm-up match against Cornwall at Wadebridge was abandoned due to persistent rain, with no play possible.
