Clevedon, the picturesque seaside town in North Somerset, is set to revive a treasured local attraction to bring joy to residents and attract more visitors. Known for its stunning Victorian pier—hailed by poet John Betjeman as “the most beautiful pier in England”—and one of the world’s oldest purpose-built cinemas, Clevedon is proud to add another cherished feature back to its lineup.
The focus is on restoring the Rio Grande, a miniature electric steam locomotive that first began delighting families in 1952. Once a beloved fixture at Salthouse Fields, this charming train has been out of operation for several years, leaving a gap in the town’s vibrant recreational offerings. Now, North Somerset Council is actively seeking an operator to lease Salthouse Fields and bring the miniature railway back to life.
Councilor Mike Solomon, cabinet member for culture, leisure, and open spaces, emphasized the importance of the project: “We’re excited to put the wheels in motion to get Clevedon’s miniature railway back on track. It’s a fantastic attraction that brings smiles to families and contributes to our local economy. Listening to residents, we’re committed to working with community groups and leisure providers to make this happen.”

Salthouse Fields itself is a hub of activity, featuring a skate park, children’s play areas, tennis courts, and a bowls club. It also serves as a gateway for scenic walks through nearby woodlands and along the coastal path, along with access to Clevedon’s marine lake for open water swimming.
With the Bristol to Portishead Railway nearing restoration, this rejuvenation of the miniature railway is perfectly timed to enhance the town’s appeal. The council has opened a call for interested operators to lease the site and operate the railway, promising a restored attraction that will once again delight locals and visitors alike.
