Somerset Coastal Town Revives Beloved Miniature Railway to Delight Locals and Tourists

The picturesque seaside town of Clevedon in North Somerset is gearing up to revive one of its much-loved historic attractions—the miniature electric steam locomotive that once delighted families at Salthouse Fields. Known as the Rio Grande, this miniature railway began enchanting visitors in 1952, offering charming rides around the park. Although it has been out of service for several years, the town is now eager to bring it back to life.

Clevedon is famed for its stunning Victorian pier, hailed by poet John Betjeman as “the most beautiful pier in England,” and also prides itself on housing one of the world’s oldest purpose-built cinemas. Now, the council’s efforts to restore the miniature railway are part of a wider initiative to enhance local amenities and attract visitors.

North Somerset Council is actively seeking an operator to lease Salthouse Fields and manage the reopening of the miniature railway. This comes alongside the restoration of the Bristol to Portishead Railway, highlighting the region’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its historical transport heritage.

Cllr Mike Solomon, cabinet member for culture, leisure, and open spaces, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “We’re excited to get Clevedon’s miniature railway back on track. It’s a fantastic attraction that brings joy to families and supports our local economy. Our residents have voiced how important this railway is, and the council is committed to working with community partners to deliver an experience everyone can enjoy.”

Salthouse Fields is a vibrant community space featuring a skate park, expansive children’s play areas, tennis courts, and a bowls club. It also serves as a gateway to woodland walks, coastal paths, and Clevedon’s marine lake, known for open-water swimming.

Individuals or organizations interested in leasing the space and operating the miniature railway are encouraged to apply. This initiative promises to restore a beloved attraction, bring smiles back to local residents, and continue Clevedon’s legacy as a delightful day-trip destination.
