Somerset Coastal Campsite Proposes Expansion with 60 New Holiday Pitches

Northam Farm Camping and Caravan Park, located off South Road in Brean between Weston-super-Mare and Highbridge, may soon welcome up to 60 new holiday pitches pending local council approval.

The site’s owner, David Scott, previously sought permission for 60 new lodges on the southern edge of the campsite. Although those plans were withdrawn in December 2022, a revised proposal for the same area has now been submitted. Somerset Council is expected to reach a decision by late summer.

The planned expansion would extend the existing access route at the site’s northwestern corner and introduce a new pond along the northern boundary to improve drainage. The lodges would be situated near Breans Sands Holiday Park and Brean Country Club, enhancing accommodation options in the area.

Mr. Scott highlighted that this development addresses the shortage of holiday accommodation caused by the closure of the nearby Pontins holiday camp, which is currently housing workers for the Hinkley Point C nuclear project. This closure removed approximately 5,000 visitor bed spaces, impacting local tourism and businesses.

A spokesperson for ARA Architecture, representing Mr. Scott, commented: “This proposal is a logical and contained extension of an existing tourism facility, responding directly to the demonstrable shortfall in visitor accommodation. The loss of Pontins Brean Sands has had a sustained negative effect on visitor numbers and local economy, and these lodges offer a sustainable solution to support tourism.”

The site is located in flood zone 3, an area identified by the Environment Agency as having a high flood risk. However, Mr. Scott argues the holiday lodges’ temporary and removable nature makes the development suitable and will not exacerbate flooding risks locally.

A decision by Somerset Council is anticipated within six months. It remains uncertain whether the application will be reviewed publicly by its planning committee north or assessed through delegated officer powers.
