As holidaymakers increasingly explore destinations beyond the coast, a Somerset city has been ranked the best non-seaside city break in the UK by travel experts Ski Vertigo. The evaluation considered official visitor numbers, transport options, and opening times to score each location, with Wells emerging as the top choice.
Wells, with a population just over 12,000, uniquely blends the character of a medieval market town with city status, largely due to its impressive cathedral. Many will recognise Wells as the filming location for the fictional village of Sandford in the film Hot Fuzz, and its historic streets have also featured in productions such as Wolf Hall, Dungeons & Dragons, and Poldark.
The city’s skyline is dominated by Wells Cathedral, England’s first Gothic cathedral and the key reason Wells holds city status. Visitors can explore the cathedral at their own pace or join guided tours. The Loft Café offers a perfect spot to enjoy views of the cathedral’s west front alongside the serene moat of the adjacent Bishop’s Palace.

The Bishop’s Palace and its 14 acres of RHS partner gardens, which include the ‘well pools’ that give the city its name, have been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for around 800 years. The palace grounds are open to visitors with a day ticket priced at £15 for adults, £7 for children, and £12 for students.
Wells’ vibrant market is a key feature of community life, held in the original marketplace every Wednesday and Saturday from 9.00am to 3.00pm. Here, visitors can browse stalls offering local artisan goods, fresh produce, crafts, and gifts.
Despite its city status, Wells does not have a train station. Visitors are advised to use connecting bus services such as the 376 from Bristol Temple Meads or the 173 and 174 from Bath Spa when planning a trip.
