A Somerset-based cider has been crowned one of the world’s finest after securing gold at the esteemed Cider World Awards 2025 in Frankfurt. Judges praised Thatchers Katy, crafted by the family-owned Thatchers Cider at Myrtle Farm in Sandford, as “technically perfect,” “fresh,” “aromatic,” and “easy drinking.”
The single-variety cider, produced solely from British Katy apples, earned an impressive 119 points, ranking it among the highest-scoring entries of the year. The competition, renowned for its stringent evaluation process modeled on international wine awards, judges entries on a point-based system assessing both technical excellence and flavor profile. Submissions endured in-depth laboratory analysis from Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences before being blind-tasted by an international panel of experts.
Martin Thatcher, the fourth-generation cider maker, commented: “Winning an award like this is the pride of cider producers worldwide. We are thrilled not only to receive this top honour but also to bring home four medals this year. It is incredibly rewarding to see four generations of dedication and expertise recognized on such a global stage.”

Paul Ross, a cider maker at Thatchers, added: “Thatchers Katy is a delicate cider that demands gentle, precise handling to preserve the unique and intricate flavors of the Katy apple. Producing a single-variety cider of this caliber and volume is unprecedented, making it a rewarding challenge to deliver perfection in every bottle.”
