Somerset Church Tower Opens for Two Days with Unforgettable Views

For two exclusive days this September, St James Church in Taunton is opening its historic tower to the public, offering visitors stunning panoramic views rarely seen before – including an extraordinary vantage point over the Somerset County Cricket Ground.

As part of Heritage Open Days 2025, a nationwide festival celebrating local history and hidden treasures, the tower opens on Saturday, September 13, and Saturday, September 20, from 10am to 4pm. This is a rare opportunity to explore a landmark that has stood for over nine centuries.

The tower, reconstructed 150 years ago, houses eight bells, with the oldest dating back to 1610. Guests can admire “Tom,” the recently restored golden weathervane perched 120 feet above the town, providing a captivating sight that adds to the tower’s charm.
