Somerset Choirs Bring Festive Cheer to Montacute House with Christmas Carols

This winter, Montacute House, the stunning Elizabethan mansion managed by the National Trust, is alive with the joyful sounds of community choirs from across Somerset. From Saturday, November 29 through Wednesday, January 1 (excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day), visitors can enjoy “Montacute House Sings,” a unique festive trail featuring recorded performances of classic Christmas carols echoing throughout the property’s historic spaces and grounds.

Among the talented participants is the All Saints Church Primary School choir, located just 500 yards from Montacute House. Under the guidance of choir leader Luch Roberts, the children recorded a spirited rendition of “Jingle Bells” right on their own school grounds. “The children were thrilled to be part of Montacute House Sings and loved sharing their songs,” said Luch. “They cherish their festive reindeer bell from Rudolph and look forward to performing for family in such a special setting.”

Other local choirs have also contributed to this musical celebration, with most performances recorded on-site inside Montacute House’s Great Hall, valued for its exceptional acoustics and atmospheric ambiance. Montacute Village Voices described their experience as “inspiring and unforgettable,” highlighting the deep connection between place and music.

The event’s musical director, Somerset-based Chris Grabham, has extensive experience leading choirs of hundreds and was recently appointed musical director at London’s Brit School. Chris remarked, “Singing carols is one of my favourite parts of Christmas. Bringing together local singers to create this project at Montacute House celebrates Somerset heritage and community spirit.” He also emphasized the social importance of community choirs, noting they offer vital spaces where people meet and make music together.

Visitors strolling through the festive trail will encounter themed areas decorated with scenic backdrops inspired by the carols and the house’s intricate architecture. To add a playful touch, a hidden white hart stag awaits discovery by both children and adults. Indoors, the Great Hall features a magnificent 15-foot Christmas tree, while the Stables offer festive photo opportunities. A wishing tree invites guests to share their Christmas hopes, and the Courtyard Café serves seasonal treats like mince pies and mulled drinks.

Gareth Parker, property operations manager at Montacute House, reflected on the event’s magical atmosphere: “Christmas is a time that awakens all the senses. We’re delighted to fill Montacute House with the sound of traditional carols performed by local voices. It creates a wonderfully festive spirit everyone can enjoy.” He added, “With choirs drawn from local communities, it’s a truly special celebration. We hope visitors will be inspired to join in, sing along, and then warm up with a mince pie and hot chocolate.”

Montacute House Sings welcomes visitors daily from 10am to 4pm starting Friday, November 29 through Wednesday, January 1, except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It’s a perfect opportunity to experience Somerset’s rich musical traditions and the beauty of the season in a historic setting.
