Somerset Chefs Gear Up for South West Culinary Championship

A talented group of chefs from the South West are gearing up as they advance to the semi-finals of the prestigious South West Chef of the Year Competition. Established by acclaimed chef Michael Caines MBE DL, this renowned contest invites chefs from various backgrounds—including professionals, young professionals, students, apprentices, juniors, and passionate home cooks—to compete for the coveted regional title.

Recognized as a highlight on the South West’s culinary calendar, the competition aims to promote professional excellence, nurture emerging talent, and celebrate the exceptional food and drink produced in the region.

The upcoming semi-finals will take place at Exeter College on September 27, showcasing the creativity and skill of the finalists. Competitors are provided with a selection of seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and tasked with crafting their own unique dishes that emphasize the region’s rich larder.

Michael Caines, the competition’s founder, expressed enthusiasm about the entries received: “We’re thrilled to see such a diverse group of skilled and innovative chefs participating. The South West is home to some of the most exciting culinary talent and world-class ingredients. This competition shines a spotlight on both, offering a valuable platform for chefs—whether professionals or passionate home cooks—to challenge themselves, hone their skills, and earn recognition from industry leaders.”

The judges’ panel is headed by Michael Caines himself and includes some of the South West’s most celebrated chefs, such as Nathan Outlaw, Hywel Jones, Scott Paton, and Peter Gorton. Following the semi-finals, the competition culminates with the Professional and Student/Apprentice Chef finals on Tuesday, October 28 at Exeter College. The day will conclude with a prestigious Awards Presentation Dinner at Exeter Golf and Country Club, featuring a four-course meal prepared by the judges and previous winners. Tickets for the dinner are available now, with early booking strongly encouraged.

Last year’s champion, Harrison Brockington, head chef at Gather in Totnes, exemplifies the competition’s legacy of propelling talented chefs to prominence. The event has proudly supported the careers of several notable UK culinary figures, including Elly Wentworth, Simon Hulstone, and Matt Mason.
