Craig Overton has emphasised the need for Somerset to deliver strong performances in their final two games, warning that “there are no easy wins” in Division One of the County Championship.
Somerset currently lead the table heading into the last two rounds of the competition following an emphatic 377-run victory over Leicestershire at Grace Road this week. This dominant win puts the West Country side on the verge of securing their first-ever red-ball County Championship title.
Speaking after the victory, Overton reflected on the team’s season-long form: “We’ve had momentum throughout the year, playing some excellent cricket. Now it’s about finishing the season the way we’ve played all year, knowing full well it will be tough work ahead.”

He was quick to temper expectations despite the teams Somerset face being in the lower half of the table, saying, “We’re up against Yorkshire and Surrey, who may be lower in the standings but remain formidable sides. Every match counts, and we know there are no easy wins, so we must turn up and put in a solid performance.”
Overton also noted that Somerset have been in a similar position in recent seasons but added that maintaining a lead at this stage is a significant advantage, especially with potentially disruptive weather forecast. “Having a four or five point lead at this stage is a big deal, particularly with some rain predicted. The pressure is on, but it’s encouraging to be ahead.”
On the bowling front, Overton led the innings with figures of four wickets for 33 runs as Leicestershire were bowled out for 145. Jack Leach supported him well with three wickets for 30 runs, while Lewis Gregory took two wickets for 10 runs before leaving the field due to a hamstring issue.
Overton reassured that Gregory’s departure was a precautionary measure. “Lewis is managing some tightness in his hamstring. He’s a key player for us in these final matches, so resting him as much as possible is essential to ensure he’s ready for the next week.”
As the season draws to a close, Somerset remain focused on maintaining their consistent form to clinch the championship title.
