Starting next month, Somerset’s bus network will see important changes, including new stops and revised timetables. Notably, the 51 Yeovil Town Circular route will be divided into two separate services to enhance punctuality and service dependability.
First Bus conducted a comprehensive review of current operations and gathered passenger feedback to inform these updates. The 51 route will now focus on the East Circular, serving areas such as Asda and Larkhill, while a newly introduced Service 61 will cover the West Circular, including Cavalier Way.
Responding to customer requests, new stops will be added at Tesco and Hendford Lodge Medical Centre, serving both the 51 and 61 routes. James Eustace, Commercial Director for First Bus in Somerset, emphasized the company’s commitment to a reliable bus network tailored to the needs of local passengers.

Changes will take effect from Saturday, August 3, with further timetable adjustments from Sunday, August 31. Updated schedules are available on the First Bus website, along with trip planning tools via the First Bus app.
However, the decision to discontinue all Route 28 and 28A services from Bishops Lydeard Station has sparked concern. The Somerset Bus Partnership criticized the move, highlighting that it disrupts a key connection between Taunton and the West Somerset Railway—a major tourist attraction—and raises serious issues around accessibility, rail integration, and stakeholder consultation.
The Partnership is urging for a suspension of the withdrawal, reinstatement of a compromise timetable during the railway’s summer season, and immediate dialogue with involved parties. They also expressed concerns regarding compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act and inadequate consultation with transport user groups, pointing to wider implications of similar service cuts in the region.
