Somerset Braces for Torrential Rain and Potential Flooding

Residents of Somerset are preparing for days of upheaval as forecasters predict a deluge of torrential rain in the coming days. A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for a significant portion of the South West and Wales, bringing an end to the recent period of scorching sunshine.

The warning is set to be in effect from midday tomorrow, Tuesday, April 15, until midday on Wednesday, April 16. It is anticipated that transportation services will be severely affected, and there is a risk of properties being inundated during this period. The heavy rain is expected to hit around 7pm tonight and continue into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to forecasters at the Exeter-based Met Office, the warning encompasses the possibility of flooding and potential disruptions to power and other essential services. Additionally, road users can expect spray and flooding, leading to extended travel times, while both bus and train services are likely to face disruption.

The Met Office has cautioned that heavy and sustained rainfall is expected to sweep across the region on Tuesday and Wednesday. Many areas can expect up to 40mm of rainfall, with some locations experiencing as much as 75mm.

South West Weather Forecast:

Today: Predominantly dry in many areas with intermittent bright or sunny periods, particularly in the east during the morning. However, heavy showers are probable in western counties, with more prolonged rainfall likely in Cornwall. Breezy southerly winds are expected. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Tonight: Occasional dry intervals, mainly in the east, although showery rain is forecast to become more widespread as the evening progresses and overnight. There will be persistent and heavy rain in the west at times. It will be a milder, frost-free night. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Tuesday: A cloudier and cooler day compared to Monday, with heavy rain in the west gradually moving eastward. Westerly regions are expected to be windy, with strong winds developing on exposed coastlines. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: The weather is anticipated to remain changeable, with potential showers or more prolonged periods of rainfall at times. Some drier and sunnier intervals are also likely. Temperatures will be around average, though it may feel cooler than in recent days.
