Somerset Braces for Intense 20-Hour Weather Warning

The Met Office has issued a new 20-hour yellow weather warning for parts of Somerset, highlighting the risk of heavy rain and flooding early next week. From 6pm on Monday, January 26, until 2pm on Tuesday, January 27, the region can expect intense downpours falling on already saturated ground.

Forecasters warn that the heavy rain could cause flooding to some homes, properties, and rural communities, potentially isolating areas and disrupting daily life. Roads may become flooded or slick with spray, creating hazardous driving conditions. Transport services, including trains and buses, may face delays or cancellations due to the weather.

Beginning Monday evening, bands of heavy rain will sweep across the South West, with accumulations reaching up to 80mm in some locations. This comes on the back of Storm Ingrid’s recent impact, which brought strong 60mph winds and torrential rainfall to the region. As a result, flood risks are expected to escalate significantly.

The weekend remains unsettled, with ongoing weather warnings for wind and rain. Heavy showers, strong gusts, and even hail or lightning are forecast throughout Saturday, with temperatures peaking around 10 °C. Overnight into Sunday, rain will merge into longer spells, with occasional dry periods before more heavy downpours return by dawn.

Looking ahead, Sunday will remain mixed with continuing rain and showers and lighter winds, with top temperatures near 8 °C. Early Monday could be dry but will quickly give way to increasing cloud and rain moving in from the west. Wet and windy conditions are expected through Tuesday, including coastal gales, before the weather begins to clear northwards on Wednesday, accompanied by cooler temperatures.

Residents and businesses in Somerset are advised to stay alert, prepare for possible flooding, and monitor travel plans as this challenging weather period unfolds.
