Somerset Boosts Confidence with Win Over Worcestershire to Secure T20 Blast Quarter Final Spot

Will Smeed’s explosive 52 off 31 balls powered Somerset to a commanding 78-run victory over Worcestershire Rapids at Taunton, sealing their place in the Vitality Blast quarter-finals. Somerset’s resurgence saw them finish second in the Central and West Group, edging past rivals Gloucestershire on net run rate, while Worcestershire fell short of qualification.

Chasing a target of 195, Worcestershire were dismantled for 116 in 16 overs as Australian pacer Riley Meredith and former England spinner Jack Leach combined to take six wickets between them. Meredith’s figures read 3-17, while Leach claimed 3-20, effectively stifling Worcestershire’s response despite Gareth Roderick’s resilient 39.

Somerset set the tone early with a blistering 75-run partnership in the powerplay between Smeed and Thomas Rew. Smeed’s aggressive batting saw him dominate the boundary line, including a towering six off Beyers Swanepoel, while Rew’s elegant strokes yielded two sixes in a single over from Matthew Waite. Rew’s innings ended on 42 from 19 balls when he was bowled by a slower delivery from Waite.

Spin introduced by Usama Mir slowed Somerset’s momentum mid-innings, claiming two crucial wickets, but Smeed continued to charge to his half century featuring six fours and two sixes. Somerset’s captain Lewis Gregory injected fresh impetus in the closing overs with a quickfire 28 off 15 balls, helping the side post a competitive total of 194-7 on a worn pitch.

Worcestershire’s chase faltered early as Jake Ball and Daniel Sams picked up key wickets. Early dismissals of Henry Cullen and Isaac Mohammed put the Rapids on the back foot. Despite brief resistance, wickets continued to fall steadily under pressure from Somerset’s bowlers as the visitors never regained momentum.

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr praised his team’s remarkable turnaround: “At mid-point, we had only two wins from six games, and qualification seemed out of reach. To come back with four consecutive wins is extraordinary, and the credit goes to the players. Facing Yorkshire at Headingley will be tough but exciting. Our improved form and confidence give us a real shot at defending our title.”

With momentum firmly behind them, Somerset now prepare to test their skills away against Yorkshire in the quarter-finals, aiming to continue their strong campaign.
