Somerset Beer Brand Revived Months After Brewery Closure

A cherished Somerset beer brand has been given a new lease on life after the closure of its original brewery. After Exmoor Ales ceased brewing at its Golden Hill site in Wiveliscombe earlier this year “with a heavy heart,” the New Exmoor Brewery is stepping in to continue the legacy of this iconic local brewer.

Starting later this month, the New Exmoor Brewery will begin production at the former Cotleigh Brewery, proudly bringing brewing back to Wiveliscombe. The first beer off the line will be a special Tawny Ale, with 10p from every pint sold donated to the Jim Laker Charitable Trust in memory of Wivey legend Jim Laker.

Exmoor Ales, established in 1979, halted brewing in May but maintained a collaboration with Hogs Back Brewery in Surrey. Hogs Back continues to produce Exmoor’s main brews—including Exmoor Gold, Exmoor Ale, and Silver Stallion—while expanding their distribution reach. Meanwhile, the New Exmoor Brewery will focus on new product development, creating special releases like the Exmoor Beast and limited editions, guided by former Cotleigh head brewer Shaun Vockins.

Distribution remains strong through Exmoor Drinks, the company handling all the brand’s pubs and bars across the southwest, as well as Hogs Back’s distribution for other markets and off-trade sales. This partnership not only keeps the beer on taps and shelves but also secures ten jobs, preserving local brewing heritage.

Jonathan Price, chairman of Exmoor Drinks, expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to be brewing again in Wivey, where it all began in 1979, under the Exmoor name and iconic stag logo. Closing our brewing operation was tough, but partnering with Hogs Back has been essential to stay independent and keep our loyal drinkers satisfied.”

Adding to the positive momentum, Simon French will return as managing director in September, bringing years of industry experience and plans to grow the team and rebuild Exmoor’s standing in the market.

Rupert Thompson, Hogs Back Brewery’s chairman, highlighted the importance of collaboration during challenging times: “Helping Exmoor Ales keeps a popular local brand alive. There’s growing consumer demand for independent, local specialty beers, and with community support, Exmoor Drinks is poised for a bright future.”

The New Exmoor Brewery will soon open its Brewery Shop, offering bottled Exmoor beers and fresh draft through refillable glass flagons and polypins. Initial hours will be Monday to Friday, 10am to 4:30pm, with plans underway to launch a Tap Room on site.

Thanks to these combined efforts, Somerset’s beloved beer tradition continues to thrive, bringing the unique flavors and spirit of Exmoor back to local drinkers and beyond.
