A rain-ruined third day ensured the County Championship match between Somerset and Sussex at Hove ended in a draw, with both sides seemingly content to share the points. The weather disruption solidified Somerset’s position among the Division One leaders, while Sussex collected valuable points in their fight against relegation.
Somerset set Sussex a target of 303 runs from just 44 overs, but neither side appeared eager to force a result. Sussex batted cautiously, aiming to survive rather than chase victory. The match took a decisive turn when rain interrupted play after 14 overs of the Sussex second innings, with the home side on 62 for one.
Dan Hughes was the sole wicket to fall at that stage, caught at second slip by Tom Abell off the bowling of Migael Pretorius after being surprised by variable bounce. At the start of the final day, Somerset were 167 for two, leading by 119 runs and making a result improbable.

The morning session saw Somerset add 83 runs for the loss of one wicket. Tom Lammonby was dismissed lbw first ball by Henry Crocombe, his 93 from 171 balls featuring 12 boundaries and marking his highest score of the season. Somerset then lost additional wickets at 266, 283, and 343 runs, with contributions from bowlers Sean Hunt, Joey Evison-recently loaned from Kent-and Jack Carson causing breakthroughs.
Joey Evison claimed his first Sussex wicket when he caught Henry Nicholls at deep midwicket shortly after Nicholls reached a solid half-century. Craig Overton was caught at deep square-leg after hitting a six, and James Rew was caught at deep point chasing quick runs before Somerset declared their innings closed on 350 for nine.
Somerset’s wicketkeeper John Simpson made a notable diving catch to dismiss Migael Pretorius, while in a pre-match squad change, Jake Ball replaced Josh Shaw after Shaw’s partner gave birth to a baby boy over the weekend.
Reflecting on the match, Somerset head coach Jason Kerr said, “A draw was always on the cards after losing the third day, particularly given the nature of the surface. Losing time yesterday was incredibly frustrating.”
He added, “There was an opportunity to get ahead in the game but unfortunately we didn’t have the chance to take it. We had many discussions in the morning about the best approach, balancing risk and reward.
In setting a challenging target of 300 in 44 overs, the reality was that only Somerset could have won. We should have scored more in our first innings. Tom Abell was outstanding again. Our bowling on day two was incredible and got us back into the game, so despite the weather, there are many positives to take away from this match.”
