Somerset and Nottinghamshire Share High-Scoring Draw in County Championship Opener

The Rothesay County Championship First Division season kicked off with a thrilling high-scoring draw between Somerset and Nottinghamshire at the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton. The pitch proved unyielding for bowlers, leading to an engrossing contest dominated by the bat.

Somerset’s innings was highlighted by James Rew’s masterful 122 off 184 balls, featuring 13 fours and 2 sixes, complemented by Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s impressive 104 – his fourth century for the county. Together, they propelled Somerset to a formidable second-innings total of 407-5 declared, setting Nottinghamshire an imposing target of 417 runs from at least 60 overs.

The home side relied on the bowling efforts of Jack Leach and Alfie Ogborne, who took three wickets between them, but the pitch’s true bounce and excellent weather conditions, combined with Nottinghamshire’s steadfast top-order batting, denied Somerset the chance to clinch a win.

Ben Slater led Nottinghamshire’s response with a gritty 60, forging an opening partnership of 90 with Haseeb Hameed. Despite Somerset’s pressure, Jack Haynes and Freddie McCann continued to resist, helping their team advance to 140-3 before the match concluded with 15 overs to spare. Both teams earned 13 points each from the encounter.

Somerset began the final day with a 223-run lead and nine wickets in hand, positioning themselves strongly to force a result. Rew and Kohler-Cadmore batted assertively, setting a record second-wicket partnership against Nottinghamshire at 217 runs, surpassing the previous best from 2012.

Although Somerset faced setbacks with Kohler-Cadmore and Rew dismissed by Liam Patterson-White, Tom Lammonby and captain Tom Abell consolidated the innings, pushing the score higher and frustrating Nottinghamshire. Despite Patterson-White’s impressive figures of 4-175, Somerset declared on a commanding total.

With the new ball, Craig Overton and new-ball bowler Alfie Ogborne attacked aggressively, unsettling Nottinghamshire’s openers. However, Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed held firm, both batting with resolve and extending the innings. Slater’s 60 and Hameed’s 27 were critical in stabilizing the innings.

Brief breakthroughs by Somerset late in the day brought some excitement back, removing key batsmen Joe Clarke and Hameed. Yet, Haynes and McCann’s determined batting ensured the visitors held on for a draw.

Despite Somerset’s strong position and spirited efforts, Nottinghamshire’s dogged resistance on a batting paradise ensured the points were shared, heralding a competitive start to the County Championship season.
