Somerset Aim to Make History by Retaining T20 Blast Title

Somerset are set to chase history this Saturday as they aim to retain the T20 Blast title at Edgbaston. This marks their sixth consecutive Finals Day appearance, having participated in the last three finals and lifted the trophy twice. Their journey this season has been a remarkable blend of resilience and determination.

Despite a rocky start with four consecutive losses following two initial wins, Somerset faced doubts about extending their incredible streak of 11 Finals Day appearances, including five in a row. But a strong finish—winning five of their last six group matches—propelled them into the knockout stages. Their campaign was boosted by emphatic victories over high-ranking opponents including the group winners and their semi-final rivals, Northants Steelbacks.

The quarter-final clash against Yorkshire at Headingley was a dramatic turning point. Somerset appeared on the brink of defeat at 82-8 chasing a target of 162. However, Craig Overton’s extraordinary innings, scoring 79 off just 30 balls with three sixes in the final over, secured a thrilling victory for Somerset. Overton’s performance kept their hopes alive for a historic fourth consecutive Blast final appearance and the chance to be the first team to retain the title.

Somerset Head Coach Jason Kerr praised his team’s grit and determination. “Getting to Finals Day again is a testament to the character in our dressing room and the belief the players have in each other,” Kerr said. “That never say die attitude has been key. Retaining the title would be huge—it would mark a historic achievement for this group.”

While Tom Banton is available after being released by England, Somerset will be without Tom Lammonby due to an elbow injury, and Lewis Goldsworthy, sidelined with concussion, despite having played every match this season.

Reflecting on his match-winning innings, Overton shared, “That’s by far my best T20 innings. Once Lewis Gregory and I were together, the chance felt real. When Lewis got out, I thought we had a 99% chance of losing, but I focused on taking the strike and maneuvering the field to score boundaries. The last over was all about keeping calm and hitting each ball to the best of my ability.”

Their semi-final journey continues with matches lined up as follows:

  • Semi-final 1: Somerset vs. Northants Steelbacks – 11:00 AM
  • Semi-final 2: Hampshire Hawks vs. Notts Outlaws – 2:30 PM
  • Final: Winners of the semi-finals – 6:45 PM

With history within reach, Somerset’s unwavering spirit and standout performances place them in a strong position to defend their T20 Blast crown.
