Social tenants in ‘poshest village’ will keep their homes

Tenants in eight social housing units in Biddestone, one of Britain’s most affluent villages, have been reassured that they will not be forced out of their homes. GreenSquareAccord, the landlord responsible for the properties, recently confirmed that it will discontinue discussions about relocating the residents.

The housing association initially considered moving tenants in April 2024 due to the high costs of upgrading the homes to meet required energy efficiency standards. However, after 16 months of consultation and community discussions, GreenSquareAccord has decided that relocation is not the best course of action at this time.

A spokesperson for GreenSquareAccord said: “Selling homes is never a decision we take lightly. As a not-for-profit social housing provider, our funding is limited and must be prioritized to maintain our customers’ homes sustainably. When long-term investment in a property is not viable, selling is considered. If tenants are moved, we support them fully with rehousing, removals, redecorating, and compensation for the inconvenience.”

Despite exploring the sale of these properties, the housing association maintained regular communication with tenants and will now focus on ensuring that their homes remain safe, warm, and comfortable.

The decision was welcomed by both current and former Wiltshire Conservative councillors, who had advocated strongly on behalf of the tenants. Nick Botterill, former councillor for the area, expressed his relief: “I am pleased that common sense and decency have prevailed. These social homes were built to serve local people and form a vital part of our community’s fabric. After persistent lobbying, GreenSquareAccord has reconsidered, and this is a real victory for the residents.”

Cllr Rich Rogers, Conservative spokesman for housing, criticized initial plans as prioritizing profit over community welfare. He added, “While many housing associations do great work, some have sought to capitalise on assets at the expense of local residents. It is excellent news that GreenSquareAccord has changed course. Wiltshire Conservatives remain committed to expanding low-rent housing to keep people close to their friends, family, and support networks.”

Biddestone, situated near Chippenham, is a historic Saxon village celebrated for its charm and community spirit. It recently featured in a Daily Mail list of Britain’s poshest villages, noted for its charming cottages, large Cotswold Stone homes, and amenities such as a village pub, cricket ground, and Saxon church. The average house price in Biddestone over the past year was £530,786, with private rental homes currently being offered at £2,250 and £2,750 per month.

The confirmation that social tenants will remain in their homes brings much-needed reassurance to this close-knit community.
