Firefighters from four different stations responded swiftly to a significant fire that broke out in an outbuilding in Witham Friary early this morning. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service first received calls reporting the fire at 9:31 a.m.
Two fire engines were initially dispatched from Frome and Shepton Mallet. Upon arrival, crews quickly realized the scale of the fire required additional support, prompting a request for two more engines, which came from Castle Cary and Warminster. The Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service also provided assistance.
The affected outbuilding, measuring approximately five meters by twenty meters, was reported to be fully alight in the central section, with flames spreading rapidly to the roof space. By 10:11 a.m., firefighters were actively using hose reel jets, triple extension ladders, and ceiling hooks to establish fire breaks and control the blaze.

As of mid-afternoon, at 1:56 p.m., the fire was still being actively fought. Local resident Rachael Shepherd described how smoke blanketed the village by mid-morning, creating a thick haze across the area.
Former Member of Parliament and village resident David Heath recounted being quickly alerted to the fire by the spreading smoke and rushing to assist. Thanks to the rapid and coordinated response of the fire crews, the blaze was managed efficiently and safely, showcasing the dedication and hard work of the fire service.
