Smoke billowed out of a CeX store on Fore Street, Bridgwater, Somerset, on the evening of Wednesday, May 28, sparking alarm among nearby residents and shoppers. Firefighters responded swiftly after receiving multiple calls around 8pm reporting smoke pouring from the second-hand electronics retailer.
Emergency services evacuated surrounding buildings and dispatched three fire engines to the scene. However, after a thorough investigation, the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there was no fire at the premises.
The smoke was caused by the store’s ‘smoke cloak’ security system, which released dense smoke to obstruct visibility and deter potential thieves. This anti-theft mechanism had been triggered accidentally, resulting in the thick clouds of smoke observed by passersby.

Police officers who attended the scene verified that no intruders had been involved. The fire service emphasized that the activation of the smoke cloak was the sole cause of the incident and that no one was at risk.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service stated: “We were called to a retail property on Fore Street in Bridgwater at 8.08pm following reports of smoke. Three fire engines and an aerial platform were sent to the site, and nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution. On inspection, no fire was found. The smoke was generated by a security smoke system intended to prevent theft by reducing visibility inside the store. Police confirmed no signs of intrusion.”
