Small Somerset Village Near Radstock Proposed for New 115-Home Development

Plans have been submitted for a substantial new housing development in the small North East Somerset village of Haydon, near Radstock. The Silverwood Partnership, a land development company, is seeking outline planning permission to build 115 new homes on a field off Kilmersdon Road, adjacent to the Grovewood Road cul-de-sac.

The proposed development will include a range of two, three, four, and five-bedroom houses. In keeping with Bath and North East Somerset Council’s policy, 30% of the homes will be designated as affordable housing. However, the application currently covers only the outline permission, with detailed plans for the homes to be determined later.

According to the planning statement, the site is “available now” and situated in a “suitable location for development,” aiming to help alleviate the district’s shortage in housing supply and contribute to creating a sustainable community.

The new homes would be located within a 15-minute walk of Radstock’s town centre, with good pedestrian connections provided by a safe, lit pavement linking to local amenities. The developers emphasize that the site design will not only provide needed housing but also enhance local wildlife and ecology. Surface water management will be handled on-site to address environmental concerns.

Haydon has historical roots tied to the mining industry, with some of its earliest homes built for miners working at the nearby Haydon Pit in the 19th century. The village recently attracted attention following a fire at a paint workshop on its industrial estate earlier this year.
