Small and Rural Businesses: The Heartbeat of Our Communities

Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) Council has officially endorsed a campaign led by ‘Independents for B&NES’ to bring Small Business Saturday to the district this year. This move aligns with the national initiative, supported by the Guildhall leadership and the Business & Skills Regeneration Team, which promotes the UK-wide celebration on December 6.

Small Business Saturday shines a spotlight on the vital contribution of 5.45 million small businesses across the country, emphasizing their social and economic impact on local communities. To encourage participation, local businesses can register for a campaign pack from the B&NES council’s Business & Skills Regeneration Team, receiving the latest updates and resources.

Independents for B&NES are not stopping there; they are advocating for comprehensive policies to bolster small and rural businesses throughout the district. Their proposals include introducing a grant subsidy scheme for businesses with fewer than 10 employees, reviewing parking charges in areas dense with small business outlets, offering enhanced rate relief, and organizing coordinated Small Business Saturday events district-wide.

Councillor Karen Walker, Group Leader of Independents for B&NES, shared her enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled the council supports bringing Small Business Saturday to B&NES. With many small businesses closing and shops sitting empty, it’s clear these enterprises are the backbone of so many local communities. Celebrating Small Business Saturday on the first Saturday in December highlights our appreciation for the thousands of entrepreneurs and business owners who keep our community thriving.”

Independent Councillor Gavin Heathcote (Peasedown) added: “More support is urgently needed from national and local governments to help small businesses compete against larger companies. The decline of the High Street is real, and initiatives like Small Business Saturday can make a meaningful difference. The Independents for B&NES have a full suite of policies designed to support small and rural businesses, paving the way for a stronger local economy.”
