Sloppy Slippers Campaign: Promoting Safety for Older Adults

Slippers are not just a cozy footwear option; they can pose a danger to your health and safety, particularly for those aged over 65. In response to the high incidence of falls among older adults attributed to ill-fitting slippers, NHS Somerset, in partnership with Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP), has launched the “Sloppy Slippers” campaign. This initiative is aimed at reducing the risk of falls by providing well-fitting, supportive slippers to eligible adults, alongside advice on preventing falls through exercise and healthy eating.

According to data, approximately 24,000 individuals aged over 65 in the UK experience falls each year due to loose slippers, leading to hospitalization. Loose, worn, or backless slippers can contribute to poor balance and gait, making individuals more susceptible to falls. It’s important to note that this issue extends beyond just the over-65 age group, as adults with mobility challenges and other health conditions are also at an increased risk of falling.

The “Sloppy Slippers” campaign involves a series of roadshows across Somerset, providing participants with free well-fitting slippers and access to falls prevention information and support from various partners such as Age UK Somerset, Somerset Sight, and the Community Council for Somerset.

One resident, Sylvia Selway, shared her positive experience with the campaign, highlighting the impact of receiving sturdy and comfortable slippers and participating in strength and balance resources provided by the initiative. Dr. Bernie Marden, chief medical officer of NHS Somerset, stressed the significance of initiatives like the “Sloppy Slippers” campaign, emphasizing the need for individuals to maintain strength and balance as they age to prevent falls.

The campaign is set to continue until March 2024, with multiple events planned across the county. Interested individuals can access more information and book roadshow slots on the campaign’s website.
