Sky Sports Secures £1bn Formula 1 Rights Deal, Blocking Netflix and Apple

Sky Sports has solidified its position as the premier home of Formula 1 with a landmark £1 billion deal extending its broadcasting rights through 2034. This new agreement effectively blocks major streaming competitors such as Netflix and Apple from acquiring exclusive rights to the sport in key markets.

Since becoming the official UK broadcaster of Formula 1 in 2019, Sky Sports has helped the sport’s popularity soar. UK and Ireland viewership has increased by an impressive 90%, with audiences under 35 growing by 120% and female viewers more than doubling. The extended deal also encompasses Sky’s coverage in Italy, securing rights there until 2032.

Netflix, known for the influential documentary series Drive to Survive, has significantly boosted international F1 audiences, while Apple entered the scene this season with a $150 million annual rights deal. Despite this, Sky’s comprehensive agreement—valued at £1 billion—reinforces its dominance in Formula 1 broadcasting.

Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali praised Sky Sports as a “dedicated, trusted, and passionate partner” integral to the sport’s growth. Sky boss Dana Strong highlighted the broadcaster’s commitment to world-class storytelling and innovation, noting the sport’s exciting future with rising British talents like Lando Norris, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and emerging stars such as Kimi Antonelli.

The 2026 season promises even greater excitement as Cadillac joins the grid, marking the first time in a decade that Formula 1 will feature 11 teams. With this new deal, Sky Sports ensures fans across the UK, Ireland, and Italy can enjoy comprehensive coverage of what is set to be a thrilling era in Formula 1 racing.
