Bath Rugby has officially confirmed the departure of six senior players at the end of the 2025/26 season. While no surprises emerged—each exit was previously announced during the campaign—the club bids farewell to a small but impactful group who have significantly contributed to the team’s success.
The departing players include prop Thomas du Toit, who will join the Sharks in Durban; number eight Alfie Barbeary, moving to Saracens; centre Will Butt, transferring to Exeter Chiefs; centre Chris Harris, heading to Newcastle Falcons; lock Francois van Wyk, off to Connacht; and flanker Ethan Staddon, recruited by Bristol Bears.
Johann van Graan, Bath’s Head of Rugby, offered glowing remarks about each player’s influence. On Springbok du Toit, who made 72 appearances over three years, van Graan said: “Thomas arrived at the club as a Springbok eager to be part of a special story and to improve his game. He is leaving as a Bath legend, a treble winner, one of the world’s best players, and, most importantly, one of the very best team men I have ever encountered in rugby. Key moments like his full 80 minutes in the Gallagher Premiership final against Northampton Saints, the two tries he scored in Premiership finals, and his selfless team-first act against Edinburgh will be cherished memories. Thomas, we believe your best days lie ahead, both as a player and a family man. Thank you for all the unforgettable moments!”

Academy graduate Will Butt departs after 76 appearances. Van Graan praised him: “Will has been a fantastic squad member and exemplifies what it means to always put the team first. He started in two victorious finals and will forever be remembered for his contributions to our journey.”
Despite battling injuries, Alfie Barbeary made 69 appearances since signing in 2022 after Wasps’ collapse, quickly becoming a cult hero at The Rec. “Who in Blue, Black and White will ever forget the celebrations after our Premiership win on June 15, 2025? Alfie played a major role in that success. He made the squad his home, embraced our unique culture, became a treble winner, and I am proud of his growth here,” van Graan said.
Another academy product, flanker Ethan Staddon, leaves seeking more playing time, given stiff competition in Bath’s roster. Since debuting in 2020 against Worcester Warriors, he made 41 appearances. Van Graan shared: “We are proud of Ethan’s resilience and development. He has delivered excellent performances, notably in the Premiership Cup Final, and his best is still to come.”
South African Francois van Wyk ends his two-year spell at Bath after recently marking his 50th appearance. Van Graan reflected, “From the moment we met Francois and his family, we knew he belonged here. He has exemplified the family-first ethos that defines this group and has been a special part of the team on and off the pitch. We will miss him greatly and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career.”
Lastly, former Scotland international Chris Harris, who joined last summer initially as injury cover, has impressed in 15 appearances. “Chris has brought tremendous value with his rugby expertise, defensive skills, and love for the game. Above all, his commitment to family and to this close-knit group has been outstanding,” said van Graan.
While Bath says goodbye to these valued players, Johann van Graan’s leadership continues to foster a strong squad ready to take on the 2026/27 season.
