Sir James Dyson Acquires 50% Stake in Bath Rugby, Partners with Bruce Craig

Billionaire businessman Sir James Dyson has purchased a 50 per cent stake in Bath Rugby, including its stadium development company Arena 1865 and the Farleigh training facilities. This marks the beginning of a long-term 50:50 partnership between Dyson and current owner Bruce Craig, who will continue to manage the club and oversee its future growth both on and off the pitch.

As part of the agreement, Sir James Dyson will inject significant capital to reduce existing debts and fund the construction of Bath Rugby’s new stadium. The club’s recent financial report, covering the year ending June 30, 2024, reveals a 12.9% increase in losses—from £3.26 million to £3.68 million—and an interest-free loan from Craig that now totals £30.1 million, repayable with 12 months' notice.

Plans approved last year aim to replace the current temporary stands at the Recreation Ground with a modern 18,000-seat stadium. Construction is expected to take three years, during which the club will continue playing at the Recreation Ground.

Since acquiring Bath Rugby in 2009, Bruce Craig has navigated the club through the challenges of the pandemic and the financial instability of professional rugby, transforming Bath Rugby into one of the sport’s elite teams. The recent historic treble, which ended a 29-year wait for a league title, stands as a testament to this successful leadership.

Sir James Dyson, a supporter for over 45 years, expressed deep personal commitment to the club. “This is the club I have supported for most of my life. My children and grandchildren do too. I have stood on these terraces through highs and lows,” he said. “Bruce deserves immense respect for rebuilding Bath Rugby into the powerhouse it is today. I am here to support him—not change the club—with greater responsibility and commitment.”

Dyson added, “My family and I are proud to partner with Bruce to strengthen Bath Rugby’s foundations, realize the new stadium, and secure the club’s future. Bath Rugby is vital to this city and its passionate supporters, who are the most dedicated in the country.”

Bruce Craig described the partnership as a natural continuation of their shared vision. “This has never been a short-term project. Our goal has always been to build something resilient and competitive that honors the club’s history,” he said. “James understands Bath Rugby as a supporter and friend. His family’s enduring support made this partnership inevitable. I will continue to run the club, and together, we will build Bath Rugby for generations to come.”
