As energy bills continue to rise, a straightforward tip from Money Saving Expert (MSE) could help millions of UK households stay warm this winter without turning on the heating. The suggestion? Focus on warming the person, not the entire home.
MSE advises those struggling with energy costs to try alternatives such as hot water bottles, electric blankets, heat pads, and foot warmers to reduce reliance on central heating. Wearing appropriate clothing is also emphasised as a way to maintain comfort in cooler rooms.
Martin Lewis, founder and chair of MSE, shared his concerns: “I really wish we didn’t need to publish this guide. I asked our team to create it after receiving numerous emails from people unable to afford their energy bills. This advice isn’t a directive from us but rather practical options for those facing financial hardship or seeking to cut energy use for environmental reasons.”

Hot water bottles are highlighted as a cost-effective choice, with prices as low as £2.99 at retailers such as B&M, £3.25 at Asda, and around £5 at Primark. However, safety is paramount when using these items.
Boots advises that while hot water bottles are comforting during cold months, users must ensure they are in good condition to avoid risks such as scalds or burns. Although hot water bottles have no fixed expiry date, their lifespan typically spans around two years, depending on usage and care.
After this period, materials like rubber or plastic may deteriorate, increasing the chance of leaks or bursting. Boots notes that heavy or improper use can also shorten a hot water bottle’s lifespan.
Many hot water bottles include a daisy wheel (or dial) on their tag to indicate manufacture date, aiding users in assessing their product’s age. For example, a bottle marked with “22” in the centre and specific dots on segments refers to its production week and month in 2022.
Despite potential degradation over time, deterioration before purchase is usually minimal. Factors affecting durability include how often the bottle is used, storage conditions, and maintenance.
When using a hot water bottle, always ensure the water is warm - not too hot. It is recommended to let boiled water cool for at least five minutes before filling. For children and those with sensitive skin, water temperature should remain below 40°C (104°F), and a cover should always be used.
Following these guidelines can help individuals keep warm safely and economically this winter, without increasing their heating bills unnecessarily.
