As the late summer and autumn months approach, British households are likely to notice an increase in spider sightings. This seasonal rise is linked to spider mating behaviour and warmer weather, leading spiders to become more active and wander indoors. However, there are simple and inexpensive steps homeowners can take to reduce the presence of spiders inside their homes.
Helen Godsiff, brand manager at home improvement company Eurocell, recommends a straightforward solution using peppermint oil. By mixing a small amount of peppermint oil with water and spraying it around common spider entry points such as window frames and doorways, homeowners may deter spiders. “Spider mating season is right around the corner, and there’s nothing worse than being startled by a sudden appearance of eight-legged visitors in the home,” Godsiff explained.
The Natural History Museum confirms that house spiders are particularly visible from August to October, as mature male spiders leave their webs to seek mates. This activity, combined with open windows and door cracks, provides easy access for spiders to enter homes. While most spiders found indoors in the UK are harmless, their increased presence can be unwelcome.

Eurocell also suggests other practical measures, including soaking cotton wool pads in a mixture of two tablespoons white vinegar and warm soapy water and placing them near potential entry points like window ledges and door surrounds. Reducing outdoor lighting where possible can minimise the attraction of insects, which in turn lowers the food source for spiders around the property.
Regular cleaning is another effective strategy; frequent vacuuming of corners, webs, and spaces behind furniture helps remove spiders and egg sacs. Additionally, placing conkers on window ledges and near entrances has been noted as a traditional deterrent.
It is important to recognise that while peppermint oil and other measures can act as deterrents, they are not guaranteed to eliminate spiders completely. The Natural History Museum emphasises that spiders play an important ecological role by preying on insects, suggesting that their presence in the home is not necessarily harmful or dangerous.
