A “significant police presence” is set to be deployed in Taunton in advance of a far-right protest and its counter-protest scheduled for Saturday, 19 September.
The far-right demonstration will commence at midday at Hamilton Park, where Nick Tenconi, leader of the UK Independence Party, is expected to deliver a speech. This event will be met by a counter-protest beginning at 12.39pm at The Market House on Fore Street.
Given the anticipated heightened tensions, Avon and Somerset Police have prepared a comprehensive policing plan to ensure safety and maintain order throughout the day. The force emphasised that officers will be on hand to facilitate lawful protests while safeguarding participants, residents, and visitors to the town.

A Section 34 dispersal order will be in effect from 8am to 6pm on the day. This power allows police to direct individuals to leave the area if their behaviour is causing, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm, or distress. Such orders are typically employed at events where anti-social behaviour or criminality may arise.
Inspector Andy Gloyn, from the Taunton Neighbourhood Policing Team, stated: “Events of this scale are uncommon in Taunton, but Avon and Somerset Police has extensive experience in policing demonstrations safely and effectively.
“Our plans are designed to protect those attending, as well as the wider community, while keeping disruption to a minimum.
“The right to peaceful protest is an important part of a democratic society, but we will respond appropriately to any criminal activity.
“Neighbourhood officers will be on patrol in the town centre throughout the day and will be available to speak with anyone who has questions or concerns.”
