Shop Mistakenly Applies for License in Wrong Town

A convenience store in Backwell, North Somerset, encountered a minor setback when applying for an alcohol license. In a peculiar turn of events, the store mistakenly listed its address as being in Bakewell, Derbyshire, a town 132 miles away. The mix-up has led to a bemusing situation for both the council and the residents.

Bakewell is a picturesque market town nestled in the Peak District and is renowned for its delectable Bakewell Tart. However, the considerable distance between Bakewell and Backwell makes it an unlikely location for a quick trip to the store.

Despite the initial confusion, the store was able to rectify the address error. However, the application still bears the name “Bakewell Family Shopper.”

The council has received nine objections from locals and the parish council, expressing concerns about the potential increase in anti-social behavior due to the sale of alcohol. Additionally, the objections also noted the error in the store’s listed location.

The licensing subcommittee of North Somerset Council is set to hold a hearing regarding the application on May 6. It will take place at 2.30pm in the Kenn Room at the Weston-super-Mare Town Hall.
