Shoaib Bashir Set to Shine in Ashes After Finger Injury, Coach Confirms

Shoaib Bashir is eager to make his mark in the upcoming Ashes series, following a frustrating early end to his summer campaign due to injury, says England spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel.

The 22-year-old spinner is preparing to join the squad in Perth ahead of the first Test match, scheduled for November 21. This will be Bashir’s first match since breaking the little finger on his non-bowling hand during the India series in mid-July. The injury required surgical intervention, including the insertion of a screw.

Bashir has remained active in his recovery, attending a spin camp led by former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara and training with the England Lions. He continues to work closely with former England spinner Richard Dawson and will soon reunite with Patel, who is confident about Bashir’s prospects in the challenging Australian conditions.

“He’s incredibly enthusiastic about returning to cricket,” Patel said. “The injury was a tough setback for him, but he’s come back stronger than ever. He’s truly ready and excited for a series that holds great potential for him.”

Bashir missed England’s last three Tests against India and the climax of the English domestic season with Somerset. Ahead of his Ashes debut, he will have just one warm-up match, a game against Andrew Flintoff’s Lions from November 13-15. Despite limited preparation, Patel believes Bashir is ready to take on the challenge.

“There’s a misconception that Bashir needs extensive warm-ups,” Patel explained. “At his age, he’s resilient and absorbs every experience with ease. He loves playing for England, something the team greatly appreciates. His unique path to international cricket shows his constant willingness to learn and give his all.”

Patel, who spoke ahead of England’s third ODI in Wellington, also praised all-rounder Will Jacks, chosen as Bashir’s backup. Jacks, who has a Test five-wicket haul but hasn’t played for England since 2022, could contribute as a powerful lower-order batsman and part-time off-spinner.

“Will is a tremendous asset,” Patel said. “Having a five-for on debut in Pakistan speaks volumes. He has grown and matured significantly and now offers much more to the team. He’s someone who rounds out the squad perfectly and is a huge boon for English cricket.”
