Shoaib Bashir has made the decision to move on from Somerset County Cricket Club and join Derbyshire CCC. The 22-year-old spinner, who joined Somerset ahead of the 2023 season, played 23 matches across all three formats for the club, claiming 21 wickets.
During his tenure at Somerset, Bashir established himself as a regular in the England squad, appearing in 19 Test matches. Despite currently holding a central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) until the end of 2026, he has committed to Derbyshire through the 2027 season.
Mickey Arthur, Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket, expressed his enthusiasm about securing Bashir: “We’re thrilled to add Shoaib to our squad. He’s a current international player with huge potential. Following the departure of Alex Thomson, strengthening our spin bowling options was a priority. Now, alongside Jack Morley and Joe Hawkins, we have an exciting young spin trio developing within our ranks.

“Our recruitment strategy focuses on bringing quality players to build upon the solid foundations laid in 2025. Signing a current England international injects great energy and experience into our dressing room, with plenty of room left for Shoaib’s own growth.”
Bashir himself is excited about his new chapter: “Derbyshire has an exciting project underway, and working with Mickey Arthur—one of the best coaches in the world—is a fantastic opportunity. I’m eager to play more red-ball cricket, continue improving in white-ball formats, and help the team push for promotion. I’m really looking forward to joining the group.”
Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, also shared his thoughts: “While we offered Shoaib a contract extension, he has chosen to pursue his future elsewhere. We respect his decision and wish him all the best. It has been a pleasure watching him develop into an international cricketer during his time with us. Shoaib will always be warmly welcomed back at Taunton.”
