Shoaib Bashir Joins Derbyshire After Leaving Somerset

Shoaib Bashir has made the decision to leave Somerset County Cricket Club and sign with Derbyshire County Cricket Club. The 22-year-old spinner joined Somerset ahead of the 2023 season, during which he played in 23 matches across all formats and took 21 wickets.

While at Somerset, Bashir established himself as a regular feature in the England Test squad, earning 19 Test caps. Despite being under a central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) until the end of 2026, he has committed to Derbyshire through the conclusion of the 2027 season.

Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, expressed his enthusiasm about the signing: “We’re thrilled to have Shoaib in our squad. He’s a current international player with huge potential, and we’ve worked hard to secure this deal. After Alex Thomson’s departure, strengthening our spin options was vital, and now with Shoaib alongside young spinners Jack Morley and Joe Hawkins, we have an exciting group developing.”

Arthur added, “Our recruitment strategy focuses on quality additions that build on the solid foundation we established in 2025. Bringing in an England international is a big boost. Shoaib will bring energy and experience to the dressing room, while he still has ample time to grow his game.”

Bashir shared his excitement about the move: “Derbyshire have an exciting project underway, and working with Mickey Arthur, one of the best coaches in the world, is an incredible opportunity for any young player. I’m eager to play more red ball cricket, develop further in the white ball formats, and help Derbyshire challenge for promotion. I can’t wait to meet the team.”

Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, thanked Bashir for his contributions: “Although we offered Shoaib a contract extension, he’s decided his future lies elsewhere. We respect his decision and wish him all the best. It’s been a pleasure watching him develop into an international cricketer during his time with Somerset. He will always receive a warm welcome when he returns to Taunton.”
