Sherborne: Somerset’s Charming Market Town Where Community Triumphs Over Chains

Nestled on the River Yeo in north-west Dorset, Sherborne is a picturesque market town renowned for its honey-coloured historic buildings and scenic Blackmore Vale surroundings. This charming town has cultivated a vibrant high street that owes its success to the unwavering support of residents and visitors who choose independent shops over big chains.

Sam Bourne, owner of Circus Boutique, which has proudly served the community for over a decade, highlights Sherborne’s welcoming environment for independent businesses. “After a challenging period with some empty shops, we’re seeing an influx of new independent businesses. Tourism and local support have been key—staycation visitors love exploring our beautiful architecture,” she shared.

Bourne also noted the community’s conscious preference for independents over chain stores. “We used to have a Costa, but locals preferred independent cafés. People really ‘go against’ the big shops here. The Covid pandemic made it clear how important it is to support local businesses.”

Emphasizing continuous growth and innovation, Bourne added, “We have discerning customers who expect fresh experiences, so we’re always evolving.”

Contrary to assumptions that Sherborne is a retirement town, it boasts a diverse population including many young professionals and commuters, providing a dynamic atmosphere. “It’s often overlooked in favour of places like Yeovil, but Sherborne deserves more attention,” Bourne said.

Local artist James Budden of Sherborne Arts praised the town as a place “where people can aim high” and are valued for their efforts. Reflecting this vitality, The Times last year named Sherborne the best place to live in southwest England, celebrating its lively high street, excellent schools, and flourishing start-up culture. The paper described Sherborne’s appeal as “more than skin deep” — a community enriched by welcoming pubs, cosy cafés, and deep-rooted spirit.

Craig Wharton, who founded Sherborne Antiques Market with partner Phillip Traves, echoed this sentiment. “Sherborne is a terrific town with friendly residents and reasonably priced homes. I rarely leave—everything we need is here, and the community pride is exceptional,” he remarked.

Together, these voices paint a portrait of Sherborne as a town where strong community bonds, independent spirit, and a commitment to quality make it an exceptional place to live and visit.
