Nestled on the River Yeo in northwest Dorset, Sherborne is a picturesque market town known for its historic honey-coloured buildings and scenic surrounding countryside of the Blackmore Vale. What sets Sherborne apart is not just its beauty but a thriving high street propelled by residents and visitors who deliberately choose to support independent businesses over large chain stores.
Local entrepreneur Sam Bourne, owner of Circus Boutique for over a decade, praises Sherborne for its growing opportunities for independent retailers. “After some difficult years and a few empty shops, we’ve seen many independent businesses spring up,” she explains. “Tourism and loyal locals keep us going. Visitors enjoy wandering our high street and admiring the beautiful architecture.”
Sam highlights that the community often favors independents over big-name chains. For instance, Sherborne once hosted a Costa café, but locals preferred independent cafés instead, reflecting a strong preference for homegrown business. “Covid underscored the importance of supporting local. But we can’t rest on our laurels; we constantly innovate to keep customers engaged,” she adds.

Sherborne is sometimes overshadowed by nearby towns like Yeovil, with misconceptions labeling it as a retirement spot. Contrary to this, Sam points out that the town has a vibrant mix of young people and commuters, making it a dynamic place deserving more recognition.
Artist James Budden of Sherborne Arts describes the town as a community that encourages ambition and values individual effort. Last year, The Times named Sherborne the best place to live in southwest England, praising its lively high street, excellent schools, and rise of start-ups. The publication noted that Sherborne has evolved from a retirement haven into a bustling hub for families and entrepreneurs alike.
Craig Wharton, co-founder of Sherborne Antiques Market, echoes this sentiment, calling Sherborne “a terrific place” with friendly residents and reasonably priced homes. “I hardly leave town now—everything we need is here. There’s a real sense of community, and everyone’s proud of what we contribute,” he remarks.
Sherborne stands as a shining example of how strong community values and local support can sustain and nurture independent businesses, creating a flourishing and vibrant town that residents are proud to call home.
