Shakira Saunders, a young graduate originally from Shepton Mallet, Somerset, has recently brought pride to the South West after contributing to discussions at the United Nations this summer. In July, the 22-year-old was invited to take part in important climate change conversations held at the UN headquarters in New York.
Shakira’s interest in policymaking began during her time at De Montfort University in Leicester. The university, which hosts its own United Nations Hub, offered a unique internship opportunity focused on sustainable development. To her surprise, Shakira secured the internship and delivered her very first speech at the UN at just 21 years old. Addressing an audience of approximately 70 people, she spoke about her journey as a young changemaker. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “I was absolutely terrified! I usually dislike public speaking, so I really had to push myself out of my comfort zone. Being the youngest speaker that day felt like an achievement in itself.”
During her internship, Shakira contributed to various projects, including “Football for the Goals,” which aimed to help football teams achieve carbon neutrality. She graduated last August with a first-class degree in law and then, earlier this year, received a personal invitation from the UN to participate in further discussions in New York.

At the Global Higher Education Symposium 2026, held in July, the UN launched a statement emphasising the role of universities in combating climate change. Shakira was invited to speak once again at the UN headquarters on 13 July, marking her second appearance on this prestigious international stage.
Passionate about youth involvement in environmental decision-making, Shakira expressed, “We need more young people in the room, especially when these decisions are impacting us disproportionately.”
Despite her achievements, Shakira is just beginning her career. This September, she will start a master’s degree in social and public policymaking at Cardiff University. Alongside her academic pursuits, she has recently purchased a house and become engaged to her fiancé.
In light of recent heatwaves across the country, ongoing drought conditions, and wildfires in Europe, Shakira shares mixed feelings about the planet’s future. She explained, “Going to the UN, meeting such inspiring people, and having energetic discussions is uplifting. Then, I open my phone and see the news. The issues often feel much bigger than me.
“I feel a tremendous amount of pressure, which I find quite ironic. Why is a 22-year-old like me feeling so burdened when billionaires exist who could solve world hunger and still remain immensely wealthy?”
Still, Shakira remains determined to continue fighting for the environment despite the challenges that lie ahead.
