In Shepton Mallet, a group of passionate crafters has transformed the town’s historic Market Cross by wrapping it in a spectacular hand-made scarf. This colourful display is part of a heartfelt campaign to raise awareness and support for the Somerset and Wessex Eating Disorders Association (SWEDA).
The initiative, called ‘The Great Make,’ encourages creativity while fundraising to aid those affected by eating disorders throughout the South West. Community members, including a lively weekly ‘Crochet & Chat’ group, joined forces to stitch the giant scarf. Gill, one of the dedicated contributors, handmade over 60 individual granny squares to form part of the vibrant wrap.
The project culminated in a public event at Market Cross, where the scarf was proudly displayed. Local councillors Lorna Muffett, Becky Kingston-Wood, and Claire Commons showed their support, highlighting the importance of community involvement.

The campaign began in May with a fundraising event at the Art Bank, featuring live music and interactive crochet workshops led by Nicky Jerrome of All About The Yarn in Chesterblade Hills. These sessions sparked enthusiasm and creativity among participants.
Gavin Osborn, SWEDA’s fundraising manager, emphasized the critical need for awareness: “Eating disorders carry the highest mortality rate among mental health conditions, yet they remain misunderstood and overlooked. This project has helped open conversations and spread awareness while generating vital funds for SWEDA’s services."
As demand for support grows, SWEDA invites others across the region to join ‘The Great Make’ by engaging in any form of creative expression over the summer—knitting, painting, writing, or crafting—to help extend their lifesaving services, including specialized support for children and young people.
