Shepherds Huts to Enhance Accommodation at Somerset Outdoor Education Centre

The Kilve Court Education Centre, nestled in the picturesque Quantock Hills of Somerset, is set to welcome upgraded visitor accommodations following the recent unanimous approval of development plans. Located along the A39 in the village of Kilve, this outdoor education site is managed by Somerset Council through its subsidiary, SSE Outdoors.

Currently, overnight guests stay in timber structures complemented by outdoor shower and toilet facilities. The newly approved plans will transform these accommodations by replacing timber buildings with compact shepherds huts, each designed to comfortably house three people and featuring indoor toilets for added convenience.

In addition to the new huts, a modern shower block equipped with nine individual showers will be constructed east of the huts. To promote sustainability, an air source heat pump will be installed to provide green energy for the entire compound, reflecting the council’s commitment to environmentally responsible upgrades.

Local officials have voiced their support for the improvements. Councillor Rosemary Woods, representing Watchet and Stogursey which includes Kilve, praised the project as a significant enhancement to the site. While Kilve Parish Council remained neutral during the consultation, the planning committee in Taunton approved the plans swiftly during their May 20 meeting.

Councillor Steven Pugsley from Dulverton and Exmoor described the application as “perfectly sound,” and Councillor Caroline Ellis from Bishop’s Hull and Taunton West highlighted the importance of maintaining outdoor educational facilities in Somerset, celebrating the centre’s ongoing contributions to outdoor learning.

With these enhancements, Kilve Court Education Centre looks forward to offering visitors a more comfortable, eco-friendly experience amid the stunning natural landscape of the Quantock Hills.
