Severe Car Fire on M5 Causes Major Rush Hour Delays

A serious car fire on the M5 led to significant delays during the evening rush hour on December 12.

The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly to a call at approximately 5:15 pm reporting a Ford Fiesta engulfed in flames on the hard shoulder between junctions 25 and 26 near Taunton.

Upon arrival, two fire engines found the vehicle well alight, with firefighters using a hose reel jet and breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze. Foam was also deployed to contain burning fuel that had spilled onto the road surface.

The fire caused extensive damage to the vehicle, which the fire service has confirmed was accidental in origin.

Despite swift action, the incident led to severe traffic congestion in the area. Although the fire is now under control and the situation is winding down, crews remain on site to ensure full clearance and safety.

Avon and Somerset Police were also present, assisting with traffic management and investigation.
