Seaside Somerset Town’s ‘Forgotten’ Estates Set for Revival with £20m Funding

Weston-super-Mare is poised for a transformative boost as its most deprived neighborhoods, including the Bournville, Oldmixon, and Coronation estates, secure £20 million over ten years through a major government initiative. This funding, announced under the government’s “Plan for Neighbourhoods,” aims to empower local communities by giving them control over how the investment is spent.

Local MP Dan Aldridge (Labour) revealed that Weston-super-Mare will receive £2 million annually for the next decade, specifically targeted at areas that have been historically neglected. The funding is part of a nationwide effort, with 330 of the most deprived communities across the country benefiting from this dedicated support, as confirmed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Unlike previous funding models such as the Conservative government’s “Levelling Up Fund,” which required local councils to bid for resources, the Plan for Neighbourhoods delivers funds directly to community boards formed by residents. These boards will have the autonomy to invest in projects that best meet their neighborhood’s needs — ranging from park improvements to acquiring and repurposing vacant buildings for community use.

Mr. Aldridge emphasized the importance of local insight, saying, “Local people know their area and their needs better than anyone else. I am delighted that the government has recognized this by entrusting significant resources back into the hands of those who live here.”

He added, “Securing an extra £2 million each year for ten years is a vital investment in our communities. The opportunities before us are enormous, and we welcome all ideas on how best to use this funding.”

Weston-super-Mare has already benefited from a £20 million allocation via the Levelling Up Fund in 2023, supporting projects like the Tropicana redevelopment, Birnbeck Pier restoration, and town center enhancements. However, the Plan for Neighbourhoods represents a new, more localized approach to revitalization, empowering residents directly to shape their neighborhoods' futures.

Reflecting on his campaign promises, Mr. Aldridge said, “During last year’s election, many residents expressed feeling forgotten and left behind. I vowed to fight for these communities and put places like Coronation, Oldmixon, and Bournville on the map. Today, I am proud to be fulfilling that commitment.”

He concluded, “This funding builds on the incredible resilience and determination of local residents who have sustained these neighborhoods through challenging times. Now, let’s show what we can achieve when given the support and control we deserve.”
