Seaside Pub with Friendly Ghost Cheers to Pub of the Year Nomination

Nestled along the picturesque coastline of Burnham-on-Sea, The Reeds Arms is celebrating its nomination as one of Somerset’s top 50 pubs in this year’s Pub of the Year Awards, following a public vote.

This charming pub, housed in a Grade II listed Victorian building dating back to the 1850s, boasts not only stunning ocean views but also a unique connection to its past. Built by George Reed, a notable 19th-century philanthropist, the pub is said to be home to his friendly ghost — possibly the very same George Reed who left a lasting legacy in the town.

George Reed’s story is one of remarkable social ascent. Born the illegitimate son of a chambermaid, he rose into the Victorian upper class thanks to his mother’s remarriage to a banker. Over his lifetime, he funded many iconic Burnham landmarks, including St Andrew’s School, Catherine and Julia Terraces, and was instrumental in bringing the railway to the town. Whether his spirit still lingers at the pub he founded adds to its enchanting charm.

The Reeds Arms is known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere, drawing families and locals alike. Patrons enjoy a wide selection of ales, including Abbot Ale, Thatcher’s Gold, and guest brews from Exmoor, Butcombe, and Exeter breweries. Classic pub fare like crispy cod and chips is a crowd favorite, and the pub’s annual fireworks display is a highlight, creating one of the busiest and most joyful days for staff and visitors.

Open daily from 8 a.m. to midnight, The Reeds Arms invites the community to join them in celebrating this nomination—a testament to their commitment to keeping the spirit of the traditional pub alive and thriving.
