Seaside Pub in Weston-super-Mare Welcomes Locals and Visitors Alike

Nestled just off the seafront at Weston-super-Mare, behind the quirky crazy golf course, The Criterion stands as one of the town’s oldest and most cherished pubs. With its heritage dating back to the Victorian era, evident from vintage sepia photographs bearing the Bristol brewery Georges & Co signage, this rare free house has become a cornerstone of the local social scene.

For the past ten years, Anthony and Karen Thomas have lovingly managed The Criterion, transforming it into a beloved locals’ hub where “strangers” – daytrippers and holidaymakers – are always warmly welcomed. Despite its popularity, finding a seat at the bar can be a challenge, as regulars claim the rows of high stools quite early in the day.

The Criterion has earned an excellent reputation for its impressive range of real ales. On my visit, the selection included Dartmoor Jail Ale, St Austell Tribute, and London Pride, complemented perfectly by Thatcher’s ciders, Asahi, Korev, Red Stripe, Guinness, and Inch’s available on tap. The atmosphere is lighthearted and buzzing with laughter, reflecting the pub’s genuine sense of humor.

Inside, you’ll find a cozy front room featuring an original Victorian fireplace, a more intimate upper-level seating area, and shelves brimming with nostalgic knick-knacks—from Toby jugs and china birds to cast iron scales and assorted vintage tools. The bar proudly hosts coin collections supporting local causes like the RNLI and the Birnbeck Pier regeneration trust, emphasizing the pub’s deep community roots.

Sports enthusiasts can enjoy live broadcasts on large screens, while competitive spirits engage in the pub’s popular crib tournament, battling for the coveted “Maggie’s Shield.” The playful atmosphere extends to a cheeky sign behind the bar that reads, “You don’t have to be crazy to work here—we’ll train you!” a witty truth that hospitality schools often overlook.

The Criterion is located at 45 Upper Church Road, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 2DY—a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic, welcoming, and spirited seaside pub experience.
