Seaside Music Pub Beats the Odds to Become Somerset’s Beloved Venue

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, many pubs struggled to survive, yet The Riff Corner, a live music venue in Clevedon, Somerset, has celebrated three years of thriving success. Opening its doors in August 2020, this seaside spot defied expectations by embracing live entertainment when others were shutting down.

Co-owner Steve Treble admits “it was a risk” and acknowledges some called their idea “mad.” But Steve, a lifelong musician, alongside seasoned venue operator Sylvie Dagaillier, envisioned The Riff Corner as a unique hub for musicians across the South West. Their determination transformed a tired former office into a modern-day speakeasy bursting with creativity and community spirit.

Unlike many venues forced to close due to rising costs and economic challenges, The Riff Corner has continuously evolved. Tens of thousands of visitors have passed through its doors, enjoying free live entertainment nightly. The venue has hosted renowned artists such as Reef guitarist Jack Bessant, Massive Attack drummer Damon Reece, and the Fruit Jazz Ensemble featuring Kasabian’s Ian Matthews and keyboardist John Baggott, known for his work with Robert Plant and The Waterboys.

Beyond live music, the venue’s upstairs art deco function room has been refurbished to host private events and gigs. The Riff Corner also offers a diverse calendar, including poetry slams, comedy nights, salsa and tango dance sessions, film screenings, magic shows, art classes, and a popular music quiz.

In 2023, The Riff introduced a food offering with Wren’s Pizza every Tuesday, which has become a customer favorite, often selling out. The venue also supports emerging talent through a monthly junior mic event that began in partnership with Clevedon School and now draws dozens of young performers.

Sylvie emphasizes their commitment to continuous growth and innovation. “When people suggest events, we listen and always look to experiment,” she says. The Riff Corner has transformed into more than just a music venue—it’s now a vibrant community space encompassing a wide range of arts.

Looking ahead, plans include expanding the upstairs area to host workshops, from creative writing to yoga, reflecting their goal to keep the venue fresh and inclusive. “Music and the arts bring people together, and here it feels like one big family,” Sylvie adds.

The Riff Corner is open Tuesday to Sunday from 4 pm to 11 pm. It stands as a testament to resilience and the power of community-driven culture on the Somerset coast.
