Sealed Pond Transformed into Bristol’s Premier Cold Water Swimming Spot

Once known for its lively seals and diverse wildlife, a pond at Westbury Wildlife Park in Bristol has been reinvented as the city’s newest destination for cold water swimming. Originally established in the 1960s and closed in the early 1990s due to animal welfare regulations, the site now offers visitors a revitalizing cold plunge pool alongside a cozy wood-fired sauna, creating a unique wellness experience.

Since 2021, Westbury Wildlife Park has undergone a remarkable transformation. Under the care of the Westbury Wildlife Park Foundation, the park has shifted from an animal exhibition space to a community-focused retreat featuring charming cafés, tranquil ponds, picnic areas, and scenic walking trails—all designed to foster connection with nature.

Enhancing these offerings is the recent introduction of the organic cold plunge pool and accompanying sauna, developed by local entrepreneurs Fire and Ice Wellness. Co-founded by Jamie Winn, a seasoned start-up beverage professional, and Neema Abbassi, a property solicitor, this initiative champions the benefits of cold water immersion therapy.

Jamie Winn shared his enthusiasm for the project: “Having lived in Westbury my entire life, I’m thrilled to help bring a holistic and rejuvenating experience back to this special place that was once neglected.” He added, “Our goal is to provide a natural sanctuary where people can relax, socialize, and reconnect with nature just minutes from Bristol city centre.”

Cold water immersion enthusiasts highlight the euphoric effects of alternating between icy plunges and warm sauna sessions. The cold therapy is believed to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and heighten mental clarity. Meanwhile, the soothing heat of the wood-fired sauna aids in muscle relaxation and relieves tension.

The venue offers communal drop-in sessions starting at £17.50 for one hour, with additional options including private hires, memberships, and corporate bookings available at premium rates.
