Screwfix Approved for New Minehead Industrial Estate Location

Screwfix is set to open a new store at the Vennlands Business Park in Minehead after plans for redeveloping a vacant industrial unit were approved by Somerset Council. The popular hardware and tools retailer, which operates over 900 stores across the UK, Ireland, and France, will bring much-needed trade and residential services to the area while creating up to 12 local jobs.

The new location, situated near the junction of Mart Road and Vulcan Road and close to the town’s household waste recycling centre, will be accessible from Mart Road and feature three parking spaces. The unit will undergo minimal external modifications and retain its current floor area, ensuring the development aligns with the character of the neighboring industrial and commercial units.

Charlotte Mills, senior planner at Hybrid Planning representing Screwfix, highlighted the store’s value to the local community. “Screwfix Direct Ltd. would make a positive contribution to the commercial and community life of the area, providing essential trade counter services to local businesses including plumbers, electricians, builders and facilities departments to large organisations,” she said.

The decision was granted through delegated powers by the council’s planning officers without requiring a full committee review. Planning officer Gemma Webster explained that the development supports Minehead’s role as the main service and employment hub in West Somerset, encouraging employment-generating activities on existing industrial sites while ensuring no adverse impacts to neighboring uses.

Construction on the new Screwfix outlet is expected to begin after Christmas, with an opening date to be announced soon, marking a significant boost for Minehead’s industrial estate and local economy.
